A celebration of connection and culture
During Weeks 5 and 6, Underdale High School proudly celebrated Reconciliation Week, bringing our school community together to honour, learn and connect with First Nations culture and history.
The week commenced with a meaningful Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, performed by Taylor Power-Smith. This special event was attended by students from Years 7-11 and provided an important moment to reflect on our connection to Kaurna land.
Our students showed outstanding initiative and spirit through a vibrant Cafe Culture fundraiser. With the guidance and support of Mr Daddow and Ms Dacolias, students served coffee, hot chocolate, chai, and delicious lemon myrtle biscuits. Every cup served contributed to a great cause, with all proceeds donated to the Wombat Awareness Organisation, demonstrating our commitment to giving back to community and caring for country.
Throughout the week, the school grounds were filled with excitement and colour. Students enjoyed both face painting and temporary tattoos during lunch breaks, providing a fun way to engage with themes of identity and pride.
A highlight of the week was the futsal competition organised by Cooper, one of our enthusiastic Year 7 students. The friendly matches at lunchtime were a fantastic opportunity for students to participate, connect with others, and demonstrate teamwork in the spirit of reconciliation. Thank you to Mr Mathews for refereeing.
Our celebrations culminated in the creation of a stunning artwork, a collaborative project between ASETO Kelly-Anne and students. This artwork tells the story of Underdale High School, reflecting connection to country, community and reconciliation. The rivers depicted represent the Karrawirra Parri (Red Gum Forest River), and the kangaroo tracks acknowledge the significance of the Red Kangaroo (Tarnta), the Kaurna peoples’ totem. The central symbol represents the meeting place where we come together on Kaurna Yarta (Kaurna Country), while students’ and staff fingerprints illustrate our shared commitment to reconciliation at Underdale. Thank you to Kelly-Anne for facilitating this wonderful artwork.
Through each event, we celebrated culture, belonging, and the importance of learning, sharing and growing together. Thank you to all students, staff, and community members who made Reconciliation Week truly memorable.
