In Week 10, Underdale High School came together to celebrate NAIDOC Week.
NAIDOC Week is an important occasion to recognise and honour the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s NAIDOC Week theme, ’50 Years of Deadly’, inspired a range of activities, learning and reflection across our school community.
As part of our celebrations, Year 7 and 8 students enjoyed a unique experience in a mobile planetarium, where they learnt about First Nations peoples’ deep knowledge of the night sky. The immersive presentation explored how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have long observed constellations as markers for seasonal changes, navigation, and storytelling.
Complementing this week’s educational program, Mr Daddow and his cafe culture group led a coffee fundraiser to bring staff and students together. The scent of freshly brewed coffee wafted through the corridors as our school community gathered in support, demonstrating the spirit of unity and generosity that NAIDOC Week encourages.
We are especially proud to acknowledge Cooper, Elissa and Nama, who represented Underdale High School in the finals of the Our SAAY public speaking competition. Responding to questions related to the NAIDOC Week theme, these students spoke with passion and conviction. Congratulations to Elissa and Cooper for being awarded runners up in the Middle Years category, and to Nama, runner up in the Senior Years category. Being selected for the finals is a fantastic achievement, and we are extremely proud of these students for giving their best.
