Underdale has taken another exciting step in strengthening student voice and agency through our first Student Representative Meeting. Two democratically selected representatives from each Project U class came together to share ideas, raise questions, and discuss matters that are important to students across the school.
The conversation ranged from everyday school experiences to much bigger topics. Students reflected on practical matters such as how they are finding the new canteen, sharing what works well and offering thoughtful “even better if…” suggestions. They also explored deeper conversations about their concerns for the future and the role young people can play in shaping it.
Working in groups around their tables, the student representatives practised respectful discussion, debate and listening, learning the process of how a representative democracy works. The ideas and perspectives raised in the meeting will now be taken back to their Project U classes, where each representative will guide further class discussions.
Together, classes will consider these topics ethically and thoughtfully before bringing back collective ideas and possible actions for school leadership. This process ensures that student voice is not only heard but actively contributes to shaping our school community.
It was inspiring to see our students engaging so seriously with issues that matter to them. This initiative is helping us build a genuine culture of student democracy at Underdale, where every voice has the opportunity to contribute to creating bright futures.
