This term, our students have enjoyed memorable experiences that celebrate and honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
We have had a strong start to the year in Aboriginal Education. Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students have taken part in several valuable experiences that celebrated culture and community.
In March, students attended Kaurna Day at the Adelaide University. This special day honoured Kaurna culture and language, giving students the chance to meet Kaurna Elders, participate in workshops and take part in cultural activities. It was an enriching experience that deepened our students’ understanding of the Kaurna people and the land on which we learn.
Our GO Foundation scholars also had the opportunity to visit Adelaide Zoo as part of the GO Foundations Culture Connect Day. This event provided a wonderful opportunity to connect with Aboriginal role models such as, ex-AFL player Adam Goodes, prominent Elder Uncle Moogy and ex-AFLW player Aliesha Newman. Students were able to explore cultural identity and strengthen their connection to culture. Throughout the day, students participated in a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony performed by Uncle Moogy, built connections through a scavenger hunt within the zoo and became storytellers through art.
In Term 2, we look forward to events such as National Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week which we can share with the whole school.
